The Alcohol and other Drugs Council of Australia (ADCA) hails Police agencies across “Our communities have had enough of the stupid and dangerous behaviour which often accompanies those who binge drink,” ADCA Chief Executive Officer, David Templeman said. “Alcohol is a serious drug, which has far reaching consequences not only for the person who consumes it, but families, friends and innocent by-standers who often pay a high price for someone’s lack of responsibility. “Our Police need the backing of the wider community for the very difficult job they have to do in confronting those who have over-indulged and are acting out and putting themselves and others in danger.” Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Simon Overland said that enforcement could only ever be a part of the solution – and that further actions were needed from a range of stakeholders to successfully confront the causes and problems associated with alcohol misuse. “Alcohol fuelled violence is one of the most pressing social challenges of our time. No state or territory is immune to this problem. It is costing us millions of dollars each year and shattering many, many young lives,” Mr Overland said. On average four Australians aged 25 years and under die each week due to alcohol related injuries. In the same group, a further 70 will be hospitalised every week due to alcohol-related assault. “We know a blitz like this can only do so much. What we need is continued coordinated action like Operation Unite from all Police agencies – especially at peak celebration times when the problems are more likely to occur,” Mr Templeman added. Mr Templeman said ADCA would continue to advocate for significant changes to national laws and policies which will address the ongoing challenge of the social, health and economic harms caused by the misuse of alcohol. |
