The Alcohol and other Drugs Council of Australia (ADCA) strongly supports White Ribbon Day, and urges all Australian men to take an oath against violence to make a positive difference in our communities.
ADCA applauds the initiative of the White Ribbon Foundation “One of the most shocking social harms caused by alcohol and other drugs is violence against women and children. Excessive drinking is not a victimless crime, it leads to so many social problems which are harming our communities,” ADCA Chief Executive Officer (CEO), David Templeman said. “We must speak out against violence against women, and stand together on this issue as communities so we can see lasting change.” Anywhere from 40 to 57 per cent of women will experience physical or sexual violence by a man at some point in their lives. (Violence Against Women: Australian Facts and Figures, White Ribbon Foundation At the recent white tie dinner for the White Ribbon Foundation, the Prime Minister Kevin Rudd voiced his strong support. “We do not want to just raise awareness. We want to change behaviour, and we have to change that behaviour in every lounge room and kitchen, in every school and workplace, in every pub and sporting club - wherever violence occurs and wherever it is condoned,” he said. Echoing his ongoing commitment to reducing the harms caused by alcohol, he added: “This is not just a women’s matter. This is not a just a legal matter. This is not just a policing matter. This is a complex whole-of-government mission.” ADCA calls on everyone in the alcohol and other drugs (AOD) sector to add their support to this awareness campaign.
