ADCA rejects liquor industry claims on alcohol labeling

The Alcohol and other Drugs Council of Australia (ADCA) says comments by Australia’s major alcohol manufacturing and distribution companies that health warning labels are not required on alcoholic beverages and consumers are responsible for their own actions, is outrageous and highlights their reluctance to put public health above profits.

Chief Executive Officer for ADCA, David Templeman, says it’s high time we stopped listening to the ignorance about alcohol related harm and that everyone acted responsibly on behalf of affected communities.

“It’s time industry acknowledged its role in this important health issue. In order to achieve sensible and workable outcomes, there needs to be a shared responsibility among governments, the liquor industry and the wider community,” Mr Templeman said.

“It’s irresponsible to dismiss the benefits that health warning labels on alcohol products would bring, especially when a trial period has not yet taken place. It’s interesting to note that the Australian industry already distributes alcohol products overseas where legislation requires labeling.”

“ADCA believes labels play a vital role in educating consumers of the dangers associated with excessive drinking, as well as informing patrons of the appropriate amount a standard drink of alcohol should contain.”

“Government and law enforcement agencies are repeatedly raising their concerns about the misuse of alcohol in our communities, with growing concerns about alcohol related violence, ready accessibility and availability, and growing outlet density.”

“This problem of alcohol misuse won’t go away with blame game antics. The alcohol and other drugs sector, Government, the community and most importantly, the industry all have a role to play in addressing the big picture problems caused by alcohol.”

ADCA has added its support to the recently announced National Binge Drinking Strategy and has been involved in two Senate Inquiries to examine Australia’s growing alcohol toll.

“Initiatives by the Federal Government through the Prevention Health Task Force and recent Ministerial Council directions should provide sound evidence on the key priorities needing attention.”
