Positive start to Drug Action Week 2008

A record 550 events will take place across Australia this week as part of Drug Action Week 2008. The Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Health and Ageing, Senator the Hon. Jan McLucas officially launched Drug Action Week 2008 on behalf of the Prime Minister, this morning in the Mural Hall at Parliament House in Canberra.

With the overarching theme of Alcohol is a drug – TOO! Drug Action Week aims to raise community awareness of alcohol and other drug issues, and to recognise the achievements of the frontline workers in the alcohol and other drugs sector.

Chief Executive Officer for the Alcohol and other Drugs Council, David Templeman, has welcomed the Government’s interest in alcohol and other drugs-related harm and their support for this national event.

“We are delighted that the Federal Government has brought this important health issue to the main stream agenda. Drug Action Week is for everyone - working to reduce alcohol and other drugs-related harm in Australia and provides us with opportunities to remind ourselves about the impact of these beverages and substances in our society,” Mr Templeman said.

The President of ADCA, Professor Robin Room, has also welcomed the high level of political commitment to Drug Action Week 2008, but emphasised that the need to keep alcohol and other drug issues at the forefront of thinking comes at a price.

“ADCA is grateful for the continued support from Government, but with so much more to be done in arresting alcohol related harm the AOD sector will need enhanced capacity,” Professor Room said.

As part of Drug Action Week 2008, the Minister for Health and Ageing, Nicola Roxon, will be attending the National Drug and Alcohol Awards at the Plaza Ballroom in Melbourne on Friday 27 June to present the Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence and Outstanding Contribution in Drug and Alcohol Endeavours.
