Alcohol, Illicit drugs, Tobacco costs validate calls for action

The Alcohol and other Drugs Council of Australia (ADCA) has welcomed a new report released today which indicates that smoking, alcohol and illicit drug misuse costs Australia more than $56 billion dollars a year.

ADCA Chief Executive Officer, David Templeman says the report by Professor David Collins of Macquarie University and Helen Lapsley of the University of New South Wales reinforces the significant work the Federal Government has been doing in relation to alcohol misuse. The findings recognise that there are substantial community health issues facing the country.

“This report focuses on tackling prevention issues, which is an extremely positive outcome, however there still needs to be continuing support and care for people who use these drugs,” Mr Templeman said.

Mr Templeman stated one of the most significant findings of the report was the rising cost associated with tobacco use.

“While a lot has been done by the Cancer Council and other organisations to raise awareness about the dangers of smoking, including providing warning labels on cigarette packets, more work needs to be done with regard to passive smoking – it remains the genuine killer.”

“Bans don’t always work - there needs to be more awareness and fostering education programs for young women and others who still believe smoking is okay,” Mr Templeman said.

“ADCA has been advocating for the past ten months for better understanding on the harms of alcohol and the associated costs to the nation. We now need to take decisive action to recognise that Alcohol is a drug – Too!” Mr Templeman added.
