9am – 4.30pm

29th of March, 2012

The Village Roadshow Theatrette

State Library of Victoria

This conference presents an opportunity for professionals that work with people using drugs and alcohol and students studying in a relevant field, to gain access to some of Australia's finest thinkers on drug and alcohol clinical practice, workforce development and public policy.

Although Australia has traditionally been perceived as a leader in minimising the harms related to alcohol and other drug use, Victoria still has much to do in keeping pace with its stately rivals.

‘What’s the harm?’ will showcase innovative and successful strategies to minimise the harms related to injecting drug use and inspire attendees to explore, discuss and debate what has held Victoria, and more broadly, Australia back in drug policy, attitude and action.

With relevant, compelling content and an engaging interview style, this one day event will feature:

Facilitator: Julia Medew, Health Editor of The Age Newspaper

· Professor Simon Lenton, Deputy Director, National Drug Research Institute
Wider availability of Naloxone to prevent opioid overdose deaths: evidence, opportunities and developments

· Dr Ingrid Van Beek, Director, Kirketon Road Centre
The Primary Healthcare Model- a foundation for evidence-based alcohol and other drug practice.

· Dr James Rowe, Lecturer and Researcher, RMIT University
Political Expediency VS Harm Minimisation.

· Dr Marianne Jauncey, Medical Director, Sydney's Medically Supervised Injecting Centre
